IX Web Hosting
In the world of unlimited everything web hosting accounts, companies like IX Web Hosting need to carefully consider their options in order to differentiate themselves from the crowd. The alternative is a race to the pricing floor that is bad for business, customers, and competition in the short and long run. Instead of opting to compete strictly on the basis of low prices, IX Web Hosting has taken a different approach that involves three tiers of services and an interesting interpretation of the word unlimited.
In most cases, the word unlimited means as much as one desires. That is not the case with IX Web Hosting, which actually places quotas and restrictions on some of their unlimited features. Before discussing those limitations, it would be best to start by looking at IX Web Hosting’s trio of plans. The $3.95 per month Expert hosting plan was recently discounted from $6.95 per month, and consumers can choose any operating system they like as long as they like LINUX. Those wanting or needing Windows hosting will need to opt for either the $7.95 (down from $9.95) per month Business Plus plan or the $7.95 (down from $12.95) per month Unlimited Pro plan.

All three plans can host an unlimited number of domains, though the included number of domains varies by account type; the Expert comes with a single domain and two dedicated IP addresses, the Business Plus plan comes with 2 domains and 3 IP addresses, and the Unlimited Pro plan comes complete with 3 domains and a staggering 15 dedicated IP addresses. Unlimited storage, data transfer, and sub-domains are part of each package as are basic features such as website statistics tracking, 24/7 support, and Ad coupons that are essentially worthless outside of the Google AdWords credits. The Expert plan lacks support for FastCGI, ASP, ASP.NET, Cold Fusion, MS Access, SQL, ODBC/DSN, but does support basic CGI/CGI-BIN, Perl, PHP V5, and Ruby on Rails+ just as all of IX Web Hosting’s LINUX plans do.
It is the definition of unlimited that is most interesting, and certainly the most open debate at IX Web Hosting. For example, unlimited MySQL 2005 databases is the equivalent of 100 in IX Web Hosting vernacular as it relates to their Expert account plan, but not the other account plans. Unlimited e-mail accounts means 2500 for customers choosing the Expert or Business Pro plans, and there are size limits that are applied to certain aspects of each account, such as the total size of SQL databases.
